World War I

World War I took place over many different places and affected people all over the world.  This book list includes titles that deal directly with the war and also those whose lives were forever changed by the war.  We read and enjoyed every book on this list.

War Horse

We listened to an audio version of this book while on a road trip.  We all fell in love with Joey the horse and the people whose lives he touched.

In 1914, Joey, a beautiful bay-red foal with a distinctive cross on his nose, is sold to the army and thrust into the midst of the war on the Western Front. With his officer, he charges toward the enemy, witnessing the horror of the battles in France. But even in the desolation of the trenches, Joey's courage touches the soldiers around him and he is able to find warmth and hope. But his heart aches for Albert, the farmer's son he left behind. Will he ever see his true master again?

Rascal

This book is not directly about World War I, but takes places in America during the same time.  You hear remnants of the war as Sterling's older brother is off fighting.  

Rascal is only a baby when young Sterling brings him home. He and the mischievous raccoon are best friends for a perfect year of adventure until the spring day when everything suddenly changes.
