The Boy on the Wooden Box: How the Impossible Became Possible . . .

on Schindler's List

by Leon Leyson

I can't say enough about this book.  Everyone should read it.

Leon Leyson  was just ten years old when the Nazis invaded Poland and his family was forced to move to the Krakow ghetto. He along with some of the members of his family were fortunate enough to get on Schindler's list.  With his incredible luck, perseverance, and will-to-live, Leyson was able to survive the horrific Nazis, his loss of freedom and deprivation of every human need.  It is story of incredible courage and one that everyone should read.

The War that Saved My Life

by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley

We recently read this Newberry Honor book and were immediately drawn into the story.  It's a tale of triumph through the hardships of war, disability, foster care, and loss.  Nine-year-old Ada has never left her one-room apartment. Her mother is too humiliated by Ada’s twisted foot to let her outside. So when her little brother Jamie is sent on a train out of London to escape the Blitz of WW2, Ada doesn’t waste a minute—she sneaks out and goes with him.

This is a beautiful story that combines historical fiction, adventure and a tale of courage.

Number the Stars

by Lois Lowry

This historical fiction story is about ten-year old Annemarie and her best friend Ellen Rosen who is Jewish.  When German troops begin their campaign to move all the Jews of Denmark, Annemarie's family decides to hide Ellen and conceal her identity. The Danish Resistance smuggles almost the entire Jewish population of Denmark, nearly seven thousand people, across the sea to Sweden. The heroism of an entire nation reminds us that there was pride and human decency in the world even during a time of terror and war.

by Marie McSwigan

In the bleak winter of 1940, Nazi troops parachuted into Peter Lindstrom's tiny Norwegian village and held it captive. Nobody thought the Nazis could be defeated—until Uncle Victor told Peter how the children could fool the enemy. It was a dangerous plan. They had to slip past Nazi guards with nine million dollars in gold hidden on their sleds. It meant risking their country's treasure—and their lives. This classic story of how a group of children outwitted the Nazis and sent the treasure to America has captivated generations of readers.

Twenty and Ten

by Claire Huchet Bishop

This book tells the story of how twenty school children hid ten Jewish children from the Nazis occupying France during World War II.

The Little Riders

by Margaretha Shemin and Peter Spier

"Take care of the little riders," says Johanna's father to the eleven-year-old when he leaves her with his parents for an extended vacation in their Dutch village. And Johanna does. She loves the twelve metal figures on horseback who ride forth each hour from the clock on the ancient church tower. She would do anything to protect them, anything. And on night she risks her life to prove it.  Set during the Second World War when the German army occupied Holland.
